Young adults often feel self-conscious about their appearance. While traditional braces could address smile issues and correct misalignment, many teens worry about the affect braces will have on their social standing. Thankfully, at Aesthetic Orthodontics, we offer a clear solution: Invisalign. In today’s blog, your Century City orthodontist, Dr. David Alpan, explains how Invisalign offers teens clear and comfortable smile correction.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Traditional orthodontics use metal brackets and wires to reposition crooked or crowded teeth. Invisalign employs a series of clear plastic aligners instead. Patients simply wear the aligners daily for between 20 and 22 hours. To ensure faithful adherence, each aligner contains a small blue dot. If the aligner is being worn for the correct amount of time, the dot will wear away. This allows parents and your Century City orthodontist to ensure teens follow the necessary instructions. Approximately every two weeks, the patient will upgrade to a new set as their teeth are gradually and gently moved to the optimal position. The total treatment time typically takes 18 months.
The Benefits of Clear Braces
Since the aligners can be removed before meals, patients don’t need to alter their diet or avoid certain foods. Removable aligners also make brushing and flossing teeth easier, improving oral hygiene. The aligners are custom-made from plastic, as a result patients rarely report the gum and cheek irritation often experienced with metal braces. The process also requires fewer office visits, saving our patients, and their parents, time and money.
