If you are an adult with misaligned teeth, chances are you’ve wanted to straighten them for a long time. While traditional metal braces may be fine for teen-agers and young adults, at this stage in your adult life, metal braces may not be a viable option. Many adults would rather hide their crooked teeth than live with a mouthful of metal – even temporarily. Luckily, Century City, and Los Angeles orthodontist Dr. David Alpan offers several alternatives to conventional metal braces: Damon Clear Braces, Incognito Hidden Braces, and Invisalign.
Damon Clear Braces
Damon System braces are considered the future in orthodontics. Standard metal braces require elastic bands that cause friction, pressure, and discomfort. Also, elastic rings of traditional braces collect bacteria and can cause a build-up of plaque, which can adversely affect oral health. Other “clear” braces require elastic ties that can yellow during treatment. Usually, clear braces also have a few visible metal pieces. Damon clear braces, on the other hand, are completely inconspicuous and use tie-less braces that don’t require tightening. Damon braces are gentler on the teeth but work just as fast, if not faster, than traditional braces. Because they require fewer adjustments, Damon clear braces require fewer visits and shorter treatment time.
Incognito Hidden Braces
Incognito Hidden Braces may be the most technologically advanced orthodontic system. Incognito is a new approach to an old idea. Developed in 2001, the braces attach to the lingual, or tongue, side of your teeth. Custom-made brackets mold to teeth surfaces, providing more comfort than previous styles of lingual braces. Also, the brackets are approximately 70% smaller than traditional metal braces. The decrease in size diminishes breakage and does not irritate the tongue. Because they are worn on the inside of your teeth, nobody will know you are wearing braces. The Incognito Hidden Braces website boasts, “These are the only braces made for flirting.”
Invisalign Clear Aligners
The metal in traditional braces can irritate soft oral tissues, causing pain, discomfort, and soreness. Consisting of smooth, comfortable acrylic aligners, Invisalign allows patients to enjoy comfortable and virtually invisible orthodontic treatment. Because the aligners are removable, patients may continue to eat foods like popcorn, apples, and gummy candy that get stuck between the metal brackets and wires of traditional braces. To make Invisalign, technicians create a set of aligners that fit over teeth like a retainer. Each custom-made aligner should be worn for approximately two weeks and will move your teeth in increments. Total treatment can take 6-18 months.
